Aftercare

        When completing drug rehab treatment there is a portion of the recovery process that is as important as the treatment that was received while at rehab, it is aftercare. Aftercare is a very important part of the recovery process, ensuring that the proper aftercare is provided and achieved is key. Aftercare is intended to provide the individual with the proper tools to be able to transition back into society and assist them for their future. Family and culture support may also play a role in the aftercare process and it may undermine an individual’s recovery as well and it will be mentioned throughout this paper.  There are also steps that a individuals that is in the aftercare process may take in order to be able to manage and deal with all the challenges that they may face with in aftercare and in the recovery process, some of those steps will also be addressed throughout this paper. Within the aftercare portion of the recovery process a human service professional may assist and support the individual as well as their friends and family in the aftercare and recovery process.

Family and Culture Support Undermine Recovery

        Family can play a huge role in the aftercare in the recovery process, family can really play a positive role in the process but at times they can be very damaging and cause a ton of problems for the individual in recovery. Family members can at times enable the recovering addict, the family members or loved ones would let the recovering addict just take advantage of them. Family members may see the family member that is in recovery as always being an addict, they may not see that they are trying to better themselves; they may also always put them down and they may see them as once an addict always and addict, never giving them a chance to be successful in their recovery. The culture that they individual that is in aftercare of the recovery process may also play a huge role, their up bringing and the way they live their life can in a way bring them down. In some cultures the use of drugs and the use of alcohol is an everyday thing, it something that is always around and something that can be extremely difficult to get away from once out of treatment and in aftercare of the recover process.

Steps a Client can take to manage Challenges

Steps that an individual that is facing challenges while in recovery can vary, depending on the situation of the individual and different challenges that they are facing. Individual will have to face challenges and not run from them, facing the challenges can be extremely difficult but it will only make them stronger as these challenges will be faced on multiple occasions. Changing the way they live their life is a start, upon the completion of their time at the rehab treatment center they must quickly begin to change the ways they live their life. “During the first few weeks of recovery it is vital that people develop new coping strategies. They can pick up these skills in rehab or by attending some type of outpatient program” (Facing Challenges in Recovery).  The individuals must also develop coping skills and strategies when facing challenges, they must face challenges in a new way, in a way that they hadn’t before. Building relationships and finding a support system is something that can also be done by the individual, having a strong support system can really make things a bit easier and they can always be there for the individual when they fall on rough times. They must also stay active, possibly getting involved in the community to prevent relapse from boredom, as that may become a trigger for them.
