Ted

1) Story

*Barleycorn

Plot – three men once come to tend to some land, but discover there is already someone there – a certain man called John

So they attack him, try to get rid of him in lots of horrible ways

They pushed him into the ground, sowed crops over his body

But, sun over him, rain over him, he grew – he grew quickly, and he grew strong

The men knew they had to get rid of him, so they cut him down, pitchforks and threshers

They put corks over him, ‘they came smick smack over poor Jack’s back’

So they thought to dry him in a kiln, and grind his bones

But, through it all, Jack came out, and remained strong

Anyone know who or what Jack is?

Jack is a story and a song, a allegory of a nation, a crop, and a glass of beer

“Put your wine into glasses, cider into pewter cans, put Barleycorn in the old brown jug, as he’s proved the strongest man.

(REVEAL)

“But I am not here just to talk about drinking, we can talk about that afterwards, but I am here to talk about…”
