The Birth of My Daughter

It was seven o’clock on a Wednesday morning in March of 1997. I was living with my parents at the time and my mother and I were up getting ready for our day as usual. She was headed to work and I was going to the doctor’s for my last appointment before giving birth to my beautiful baby girl. I was 9 months pregnant and due in about a week. We were in the kitchen having our daily breakfast as usual sitting and chatting about what our day had in store for us. I was about to take a bite of my bagel, when I felt a slight tightening of my stomach. I gave my mom this look and she immediately asked, “What’s wrong, why are you looking like that?” I replied with a soft voice, “Oh mom it’s nothing”. I continued eating when about twenty minutes later it happened again. That’s when I decided to tell my mother I thought I was having contractions. She looked at me and jumped up from the table and screamed, “Oh my God”, we have to go to the hospital. I laughed and said, “Mom please calm down I think I should just go to the appointment first and see what the doctor says.” She replied, “Well I am going with you, no work for me today I am about to be a grandmother.”

Sitting in the doctor’s office the pains that I assumed were contractions were still coming but not as often. Every five minutes my mom would ask me if I was okay or if I needed anything. I think she was more nervous then I was but I couldn’t understand why. After all this would be her second time going through this because my sister had a baby about four years prior. I guess it was just the excitement of being a grandparent again. While we were waiting to be called my mom decided to call the whole family to let them know the baby would be coming sooner than we thought.

Finally the nurse called us back and I explained to her about the pains that I had been having all morning. She immediately hooked me up to the monitors to check the baby and make sure everything was okay. Within a few minutes she was able to tell us what we pretty much knew, I was in labor and
