Personal Perception of Organized Crime Paper

Growing up in America we have a lot of media outlets that tend to portray different outlets of organized crime in different lights. So this makes it difficult for the vast majority of Americans to get a firm grasp on what organized crime is and how it affects them. Some movies glorify certain types of organized syndicates such as gangs in this allows them to grow and recruit more soldiers into their organization. This author grew up in border towns in Southern California where Mexican gangs are quite prevalent. So early on there was an insight into organized crime. The reason this author believes that a gang would be considered organized crime is due to the structure and nature of gangs. They generally have a pyramid type hierarchy that starts off with the person that oversees the gang’s duties and controls the money and drugs within that gang. Then the pyramid branches out to some kind of lower management that assigns day-to-day operations for the so-called soldiers that patrol the turf sell the drugs and collect the money on a day-to-day basis. Being as there is this hierarchy in these controls put into place by the gangs kingpin the gang is somewhat organized and has a common goal in which it works towards a daily basis. Since the early days of gangsters/gang bangers organized crime has evolved due to the evolution and technology we have today. Nowadays it’s not all just about money, drugs, and power. With the introduction to the digital world information is key and has a great influence within certain political circles in organized crime has evolved and adapted to the technology at hand and is utilizing any means possible to gain control over the people to blackmail or manipulate certain processes to benefit their syndicate.

The definition of organized crime and the perceived definition by this writer are not that far off. Both examples shows a hierarchy in which these criminals operate from. Both describe the goals in which the organization is going after rather it be money, drugs, political agenda, and even information. One thing this author liked about the description in the reading was the book made it sound more structured an actual business like. Whereas this author is always seen it as more of organized chaos in a sense. Because all that you see from the outside looking in is
