In the first place, the movie begins following a plane crash that leaves the pilot dead and a bunch of young boys, aged five to twelve, scattered throughout a tropical island. The protagonist of the movie is Ralph. He is twelve year old, tall and has a fair hair. Ralph and his portly fellow Piggy then find a couch shell in the beach and realize that they can use it to rally the other boys. Once assembled, the boys set about electing a leader. They choose Ralph as their leader, and Ralph appoints another boy, Jack, to be in charge of the boys who will hunt food for the entire group.

Devising a way to be rescued, they decide that it is probably the best to build a fire to signal any passing ships. To do so, the boys focus sunlight through the lenses of Piggy’s eyeglasses. Another boy, Jack, the leader of hunters, jealous of Ralph’s power, decides the boys should devote their energies to hunting food (namely pigs on this island) instead of maintaining the fire. Jack, among many others, seems to become more and more cruel and violent the longer they are on the island.

The conflicts appear in the island when the hunters who are supposed to be tending the fire skip out on their duty to kill a pig. The scene makes all the boys seem like primitive savages instead of well-behaved British gentlemen. When a plane passes by, Ralph and Piggy notice that the fire has already burnt out. After that Ralph criticizes the hunters, but they have just returned from their first kill and Jack has also managed to punch Piggy in the face, by which makes one lens of his glasses broken.

Back to the group, Jack and Ralph have a fight so that Jack decides to leave the group, asking the other boys to come with him to have a playful life with meat and games together. They do not follow Jack at first, but when Ralph commands the boys to build shelter and make the signal fire, most of them have gone and joined Jack’s tribe. Jack declares himself the leader of the new tribe of hunters and organizes a hunt and a violent, ritual slaughter of a sow to solemnize the occasion.
