Americans have their own sense of perfection when it comes to their culture. Many Americans will also go through superlative measures to look like what they deem is “perfect”, from crash diets and plastic surgery to body markings and body piercings. These measures allow an individual to express themselves in ways that they want others to view them as. Body modification can play a huge role in how an individual feels about themselves as far as their physical appearance goes it allows them to tell their story.

According to the free dictionary online body modification is any method of permanently adoring the body, including tattooing and piercings. But there are also side effects to these types of body modifications. When an individual chooses to make and go through these extreme changes, they are also putting themselves in the frontline for some sort of backlash from individuals who do not approve of or feel that these types of modifications are immoral. Body modification can have many different standpoints for a diverse argument among our society, it can be debated that this is a practice from our ancestors, as well as a way for an individual to boost their self-esteem or retain their youth.

Tattoos and piercings have been around globally for years. Why individuals in many societies may choose to alter their appearance, go through the physical pain and back lash from others in society for whatever reasons produce and brings forth many different answers. For example kids and teenagers (the younger generation) see all these famous people who have modified their body in some shape or form and the younger generation becomes unsatisfied with their selves. According to USA Today (2009), research shows that attractive people are viewed more positively in just about every situation studied, such as education, employment and healthcare to name a few.
