Threat of Nuclear War

Nuclear War is always a threat with today’s technology but the fears are nothing like they were in the 1950’s. On the other hand with all the technology we have today we also have state of the art defenses and warning systems to help deter nuclear war. The 1950’s didn’t have all of these advances though and fear of nuclear war was everywhere.

What it must have been like

Living with this constant fear people started to build fallout shelters, stock up on can goods, had nuclear warning drills like kids have fire drills in schools, and those are just a few of the things people did out of fear of nuclear war.

The shear paranoia must have been terrible at first as well and especially for children. Imagine having all these drills in school, watching your parents take cautionary measures, and hearing the conversations your parents had about it. This probably made the boogie man look friendly!

In comparison I don’t think the fear of terrorism is as great as the fear of nuclear war was back then. I do think that it’s the closest we can ever come to understanding what it must have been like to live in those times. It’s always on your mind, in airports, in movie theaters, at work, at the mall, its everywhere. You know it’s a possibility but you also there are plenty of defensive measures in place now to prevent the terrorism.

Conclusion

The fear is the same, the threats are similar, but all in all the threat of nuclear war is much scarier than any terrorist attack. Nuclear war would wipe out an entire civilization in the blink of an eye and anything that poses a threat like that would cause fear no matter what generation it’s in.
