Why the One Child Policy is Bad for China

Facing overpopulation, China decided to carry out one child policy in 1979. That means family can give birth to only one child except in some special situations. It consists of a set of regulations which includes restrictions on family size, late marriage childbearing and so on. According the demographic census in 2000, from 1979 to 2000, the policy has prevented 400 million children from being born effectively. However, the one child policy has much bad influence on China’s economic development and social stability. It has effects on several aspects such as children’s attitude, sex ratios and other social issues. Therefore Chinese government changed this policy.

To begin with, children’s ability to control themselves becomes weak if they are the only one in a family. Brothers and sisters sometimes will fight with each other, and it may sounds bad, but in fact, after the fight, they will try to figure out who is wrong. When they are older, they will be able to control their anger, and try to listen to the others. However, if that child is a single child in a family, he might never realize to control himself or try to listen to the others because he never face that situation before. …Children become selfish when they are the only kid. In a single child family, parents give everything to the kid and there are no brothers or sisters to share with. Such as Charismas gift, all the gifts are for that kid, and no one can take his or her gifts. Then, this kid might start to believe that everything for him is granted, and never feel thankful when the other people give him something. “It remains to be seen whether excessive attention by doting parents on their one and only child will produce a generation of selfish, uncooperative and socially maladjusted children. There has been much talk about the 'spoilt brat syndrome' and the Chinese have coined the pejorative expression,
