Is crime in society violent in nature

Violence has been defined as “ any unjust or unwarranted exertion of force or power as against rights, laws etc.”

Upon reading from the works of Australian Institute of Criminology it has been written that over the past decade there may have been concerns that Australia was becoming a violent society. It was suggested that Australia was starting to succumb to an influx of crime that was violent in nature, and that the public 's fear had increased. The publics fear of violent crime has increased to media outlets and to social media networks that now can be found quite easily on the internet. Information is found to extent via internet searches and with most media outlets now available on line.

Statistics that were collected, stated that society believed that violent had increased in recent years. This is due to the masses of information that is circulated from the media.

In today's society, the contemporary media portray violent crime by reporting misinformation of the nature of the crime that is committed in our society. The media tend to sensationalise violent crime more so than non violent crime, with people who gather their information from them having a higher misconception of crime in the society that they live in. Statistics show that for every violent crime that is committed and that they media reports on, there are sixty five non violent crimes that the media does not report on. The media does also not report on the facts of for every homicide there is also about seven suicides and nine deaths due to motor vehicle accidents. The media need to stop sensationalising violent crime within Australia and to start reporting on other types of crime and to also bring awareness of other issues that surround our society.

While interpretation of the crime statistics can be reasonably accurate it should be noted that they should be undertaken with care while analysing them. Over the past five years that statistic

records became more accurate in the way that they have been collected. The improvements in technology,record keeping and the advances in database management have helped to accurately measure how much violent crime has decreased or increased over a period of time. Australian Crime Statistics can lead to mass panic within society as the perception of the level of violent crime and increasing danger has lead to blame being thrown around in regards to breeding distrust and anti social behaviour in society.

Violence that occurred prior to the advances in technology most likely not be considered a crime until the law and legislation changed recently, domestic violence and child abuse were considered a topic that was not discussed
