ASSIGNMENT 1: CASE FOR DISCUSSION

  1. BREAKING THE GALSS CEILING
  1. What challenges do women face working in large corporations?

Women face a myriad of challenges every day in the business world. The projection of their professional careers clashes with a glass ceiling that is built, among other factors, by the conciliation between the labor sphere and that of private life.

Some of the challenges women face are:

  • The balance personal life-professional life
  • The gender wage gap
  • Harassment in the workplace
  • Equal access to professional opportunities
  • The impact of motherhood on the professional career

In my opinion, organizations are failing in the construction of female talent. In addition, another problem is that the rise of women to executive levels is not sustainable over time.

  1. What advantages, if any, do you believe would accrue from having diversity among managers?

It is difficult to think of successful organizations of the future without understanding that the key is the leadership made up of men and women. Diversity between countries is a competitive advantage, which includes cultures, styles, skills, education, and ways of seeing the world.

Diversity in an organization is about creating an organizational culture strong enough to understand differences of any kind, with programs that ensure the well-being of employees, and where there is an environment in which communication is open and effective.

The advantages of managing the way diversity in countries, increase creativity and innovation in organizations, improve the decision making offered by different perspectives on a problem. In cases where it is not well managed, there may be a high degree of turnover, difficult communication and a greater number of interpersonal conflicts.

Companies tend to be more successful when there is a balance between women and men in the communities, people live and work more. Promoting diversity, through human resources policies, offers a competitive advantage that also helps some important issues in the world today, both inside and outside the workplace.

  1. Do you think there is really a glass ceiling in corporations? Why or why not?

In my opinion, I believe that there are stereotypes and sexist roles that still persist in society and in the business world. Motherhood is presented as the biggest problem for women so that companies consider them as apt for responsibilities.

The role of caregivers assigned to them by society throughout history, and which in part is still assigned to them, conditions their professional life. The fact of being a mother, or the possibility of being a mother, implies that companies do not take into account their personal worth, both in hiring and in promotion. Another important aspect is that it is the labor market, women are treated differently than men without any other explanation than discrimination. This can happen at several levels: the employer, the workplace, or the clients. (Who prefers to deal with men than women).
