                                         Abstract

This article by Salinas from university of Texas gives an introductory definition of psychological disorders. The author first starts by giving a brief definition of abnormality. And to further explains it gives the definition of what’s normal. The author gives the module for classifying abnormality. The article also talks about anxiety disorders and their sources. In addition, it describes mood disorders; their main categories and symptoms. The article, gives a definition to schizophrenia, and identifies its forms and their symptoms. Afterwards it identified personality disorders and their characteristics such APD and BPD.

Abnormality definition

According to Salinas identifying abnormal behavior or a disorder is not as easy as it may seem. Each society has different social norms and has different acceptance or rejection of behavior. In other words what might ne a normal and suitable behavior might not be the same in another society. Sometimes even within the same society what we can accept from one person might be different from the expectations we hold another person to. She further states:” views of suitable social behavior aren’t absolute. The author agrees that most societies agrees on one aspect as being abnormal and indicate possible mental disorder is behavioral maladaptiveness. The author identifies it as a person with mental and behavioral disorder with the affinity to self -destruction or people close to them.

Normality:

Identifying normal is an even harder task than identifying abnormal in the author’s opinion. The two main factors that can explain normality is efficient perception of reality and voluntary control over behavior. In addition the person should be able to value oneself, which increases self-esteem and acceptance within societies. Moreover, The person should be able to engage in humanistic relationships with others. And, maintain productivity, which is transformed energy.
