Abstract

In this paper I am going to talk about how the organization achieves a competitive advantage by using the employee selection methods. The importance of fit to Outback Steakhouse will be discussed. Also, Outback’s selection process will be evaluated and will include the applicant’s order of selection methods as follow: completing an application and tests, and their participation in an interview. These methods will also be evaluated to determine if they are valid.

Discuss how the employee selection methods at Outback Steakhouse help the organization achieve a competitive advantage.

Outback Steakhouse employees are its reason for having a competitive advantage and they are also the reason why the company is successful. When choosing their employees Outback Steakhouse uses the long term specialist approach. With this method Outback can determine if an employee will fit with not only the job but the organization itself (Stewart & Brown). Through the selection method Outback is able to select employees that may not have all the skills that they require but they may have the ability to work in an environment that is team oriented, can think outside the box, and be committed to the organization. The right people will be selected through the realistic job preview and testing methods. This approach will allow Outback to not have a high turnover and to employ individuals that are service oriented and committed to the organization.

Discuss the importance of fit to Outback Steakhouse.

The importance of fit to Outback Steakhouse is very high, and because of its approach to how important a job fit and organizational fit is to its business, Outback believes that they must hire employees that will be a perfect fit for its values, vision, culture and beliefs. The hiring process that they have put in place will assess and evaluate the applicant’s skills, work ability, and personality to make sure that they hire the right people that will be able to adapt according to its values, vision, culture and beliefs. “Outback Steakhouse screen for friendly, energetic, and customer-oriented applicants during the interview process.” (Outback Steakhouse Interview Questions) In order for Outback to be successful their employees must fit to eliminate the possibility of conflict among each other, upper management, and customers.
