Functional Areas of Business Paper

        What is a manager? A manager is the person who coordinates and oversees that work is being done and the organizational goals are being met.

Managers perform certain functions as they efficiently and effectively coordinate the work of others (Robbins & Coulter, 2012, p. 9). Managers need to make the correct decision at the right time. To apply the right decision at the right time, managers need to be engaged in the Planning (making goals), Organizing (what tasks need to be completed), Leading (work with personnel and accomplish goals), and Controlling (managers monitor and evaluate their performance).

Roles of Managers

Managers are classified as first-line, middle, and top managers. First-line managers are supervising and oversees the work of non-managerial personnel. First-line managers are also known as supervisors, shift, district, department, or officer managers.

Middle managers oversee the work of first-line managers. Middle managers could be known as regional, store, division managers, or project leaders.

Top managers are the CEO, COO, managing director, executive vice president, or president of an organization. They make the organization decisions and create the plans and goals for the organization.

Managerial roles as described by Henry Mintzberg refers to certain procedures demanded of and demonstrated by a manager. Managers also need to have Interpersonal roles, Informational roles, and decisional roles. To be a successful manager, managers need to be able to perform these three roles. Managers need to have interpersonal skills or “People Skills” (Judge, 1999). For managers to be informative, they need to accumulate and publicize the information to his/her people. Managers finally need to be the final decision makers within their department.
Functional Areas
        Organizations include four main functional areas: marketing, operations, finance, and human resources (Jiang, 2009). These functional areas make decisions and put the tactics into action for the entire organization. There are a lot of opinions concerning which functional area is deemed the utmost crucial for the long-term growth of an organization. All four of these functional areas are crucial for an organization. These functional areas are interrelated and interacted for the operation of the organization.

Marketing could be the most significant part of the functional areas. Marketing is about recognizing the customer’s demands that guide an organization. Marketing researches and analyzes the organizations products and keeps an eye out for changes to the customer’s needs. Marketing must ensure other departments are on track with the organizations objectives.

Operations management is involved with the organizations production of goods and services. Research and Development is a huge part of Marketing. Operations management is concerned with making the correct decisions for the designs and the having the right resources of organizations products. Marketing and operations management collaborate on the final conclusion on the costs of the products.
