Exercise 2 (chapter 4)

1. The president of a large manufacturer of household appliances (such as dishwashing machines, refrigerators, washers, and dryers) that are manufactured and sold in the United States, Japan, Mexico, and Europe has asked you to develop a list of factors concerning major environmental trends that might have impact on the company’s strategies and programs. Identify the important environmental issues, and evaluate the impact of each issue.

These are the following issues that may impact the company’s strategies. The first one in this is Global Warming. Global warming has created a swift change in the way people purchase products and how governments are forcing companies to comply with ecofriendly rules and regulations. Companies complying with these rules have to face serious increase in costs to compensate for damages done to the environment. This changes the whole of company’s strategies. However, due to the recent USA elections and Donald Trump winning those elections, household appliances can now take a breath of fresh air. Donald Trump has a very neutral stance on the issue of global warming and is good news for the companies. The second issue is the issue of waste disposal. The electronic waste is a non – biodegradable waste, which threatens health of the natural life as well as human beings. Waste disposal costs companies millions of dollars every year.

2. Drinking water pollution (contamination) has become a serious problem in many countries. What problems and opportunities does this present for what consumer and industrial goods?

For the consumer goods the opportunity is the sales of bottled water and clean water solutions. Consumers that face water pollution will tend to purchase bottled water to avoid hygiene related problems. The problem for consumer goods is the probable increase in the carbon footprint.
