INTRO

        Narrative literature is an imperative tool of information that can be used to teach lessons in various content areas such as English, Social Studies, Math and Science.  Narrative literature is greatly used in the English classroom throughout novels and short stories.  Narrative literature is any item of writing that details a story and can appear in both fiction and non-fiction.  Narrative literature can appear in fiction via novels and non-fiction pieces as memoirs.  Throughout the use of narrative literature, it brings academic success in fostering critical thinking skills in all content areas.  In a general topic, narrative literature includes the following: characters, a plot, themes and problems.  However, in fictional material, a setting and ending are generally present.

        Narrative literature throughout storytelling helps to reemphasize moral lessons of a culture and detail values and norms.  Narrative literature can also embark as a method of entertainment through helping individuals thoroughly understand human psychology and provided an essential understanding of life.  The comprehension of narrative literature ensures that an understanding of the setting, reaction, beginning and end are all accessed through the work of the narrative.

Narrative language can be used in various forms in different content area classrooms.  One use is that it can establish a connection in the relationship of events that occur in their lives.  Many narrative literature works can be tied to other content area classrooms.  An example would be a text that discusses a specific war.  From this piece of narrative literature, students can tie a connection of the events that took place during this way to present world events and similar events that are occurring around students daily.  The same novel can be beneficial to other content areas such as psychology or sociology when learning about violence or abuse that can take place as a result of the war.  Individual reading or group reading or a class novel are all effective uses of narrative literature that can be implemented in any content area classroom.  All content area should be increasing the use of literacy in their classroom as this could be a critical tool in increasing and encouraging literacy use in the elective classrooms as well.  Narrative literature stands as a significant way of supplementing students with vital information that allows students to gain a sufficient understanding of the content that is being instructed.  Narrative literature gives students the opportunity to immense themselves in a different world, including all of the events and settings that they have learned about.  In all classrooms, narrative literature can also provide students with a consistent technique in regards to building a clearer understanding of cause and effect.
