Empowerment by a transformational leader

Empowerment is the practice of sharing power, and rewards with employees as well as holding them responsible and accountable for their actions contributes to building their competence and satisfaction. A transformational leader empowers their followers by allowing them the freedom to be independent, self-sufficient, and make decisions on their own, improving performance and service. Followers having the ability to think and act on their own builds their confidence in handling difficult situations in ways that they feel is best (Northouse, 2003).

The use of empowerment can improve productivity since the follower is able to make decisions on his or her own and not have to wait on an approval from the leader. This saves a lot of time, which speeds up the production. This can make the follower feel that their contributions matter because they are trusted to make valuable decisions that affect the company and raise the moral of the followers. By providing the proper guidance through empowerment and the ability of making decisions, encourages the followers to produce better quality work (Hamlin, 2014). Followers need guidance, it is important to be sure that the followers have an understanding of all of the visions and values of the organization so that their decisions will meet the goals of the company. This could lead to potential chaos as well if each follower is able to make decisions under their own guidelines and could potentially slow down the company during certain times of change (Hamlin, 2014).

Empowerment, individual consideration and intellectual stimulation

A leader will consider a followers interests and strengths, and then choose a purpose and vision to create structure that will support the team. The impact of transformational leadership on the performance of their followers is often explained as stemming from the development and empowerment of the followers, which increase both their ability and their motivation (Bass, 1997). Individual consideration is the part where the leader takes the needs, skills and feelings of the follower
