Subject: Carnival Splendor Ship Debriefing

This memo is to inform you of the details relating to the ship, Splendor and the critical issues and recommendations for action.

Details:

On November 8, 2010 the Carnival Splendor is without electrical power 200 miles south of San Diego, California. The ship was on its 2nd morning of a weeklong trip. The cause was a fire in the aft engine room. It was successfully extinguished by crew members and the built in fire suppression but our engineers are unable to restore ship power due to the damage to the switchboard. No passengers or crew members were injured but 3,299 passengers and 1,167 crew members are enduring challenging circumstances. The elevators, air-conditioning, food refrigeration are inoperable. Sanitation issues are arising along with boredom and long lines for food.

Critical Issues:

 Almost 4,500 people are stranded on Splendor that is 200 miles south of San Diego with no electrical power.

 We must determine a means to tow the ship safely back to port. Guest safety must be the upmost importance.

 This is important in demonstrating our Mission and Vision Statements. We are committed to them at all times.

 Passengers and crew members are experiencing challenging conditions.

 Food, water, sanitation and other living necessities are severely limited.

 According to SCCT, priority should be protecting them from further harm and helping them cope with the psychological stress of the situation. (Protecting Organization, 2007, p. 3).

 Passengers and crew members will need information and updates on a regular basis to alleviate the stress caused by uncertainty.
