The author in Monkey see Monkey do is generally trying to explain how writing is never wrong or right, it is just how the reader perceives it. I personally agree with this theory, and I have struggled with teachers and professors being able to understand my style of writing. I consider myself to be a relatively strong writer, but it seems as if I am sometimes never properly understood when my papers are graded. I believe that writing should not be tethered and guided like a train. From elementary school onward, students are given government issued writing prompts and guidelines by which to write them. Students should be taught the correct methods of writing, and the formalities and such, but I do not believe they should have to be restricted to certain topics, certain guidelines, or certain words. Writing involves thoughts and ideas that are unique only to the writer, and I believe that if a writer wants to say "I'm going bananas" he should be able to do so. I don't believe that old men in funny wigs three hundred years ago should be able to dictate what the standard of "presentation of ideas on paper" is. I am a strong believer in education on how to write but not what to write. This essay mainly describes what people think a teacher would say if a student were to write various things, starting with "I'm going bananas". The first time the teacher corrected the paper, the students said that the teacher would most likely say that the statement was pure slang. When the student corrected it with the words "I am going crazy", the students thought that the teacher would correct it by saying its was too conversational for standard English models. After the student replaced the sentence with things such as "I am losing my mind" the teacher was expected to write something such as "you can't actually lose your mind, otherwise people would find other peoples mind laying around.
