The story takes place in Stepford. Stepford is a little town in America. The period when the story takes places is about 1950. During of the story is a bit more then 4 months.

Main characters:

Joanna Eberhart: Main character, she's interested in politics. She's a very good photographer. Not a real housewife.

Walter Eberhart: Joanna's husband. He becomes a member of the Stepford Men's association.

Bobbie Markowe: Joanna's best friend. Funny. Very messy.

Ruthanne: Writer. She meets Joanna in the library. A black woman.

Theme:

The Stepford men change the woman into a sort of robots, like they're brainwashed. It happens to every woman who lives 4 months in Stepford.

End:

The book has an open end. In the final chapter Joanna is changed into a housewife. When she's in the supermarket she meets Ruthanne. Ruthanne is not a housewife yet. She sees how much Joanne has changed. She writes a book about the Stepford Wives, that's the end. So the men can go on with turn the woman into housewives. And the book doesn't say how they change the woman.

Summary:

Joanna, Walter en hun twee kinderen Pete en Kim verhuizen naar Stepford. Eenmaal daar aangekomen wordt Joanna geïnterviewd door de plaatselijke krant. Ze vertelt wat haar hobby's interesses zijn in de hoop een paar vrienden te krijgen. Ze gaat ook eens naar de buurvrouwen, misschien zijn die wel aardig.
