        At the workplaces employees have to deal with low-wage workers, police departments are unique for stresses and risks associated with that type of labor.  Every shift an officers can be involve a life-or-death matters, plus the possibility of  dealing with lethal force having to used  them in a matter of split-second decisions. There main impact has been financial as they creation plus expansion.   Today they represents over 300,000 police officers nation-wide since the union over the years it has involved increased costs with the payment of overtime and other benefits. One of the most important contributions of the union for law enforcement is the legal protections they have provides when a officer is investigated for possible improper behavior, in the event  of corruption or of excessive use of on a suspect.   A presence of the union makes sure that the officer is provided the legal representation needed for his or her defense. Benefits that a police officers haves got from the unions that are similar to the benefits that all group of workers gets from a union.  The second has to do with benefits that are for unique to police officers. When a police that perform unique service that they work hard to protect police from what they see as excessive pressure from outside groups.  This is to protect their position in our society and that often the target of great amounts of criticism.  The unions protect individual officers who are being accused of things like abusing their power that are not doing so.
