MYP Unit Question: How can Eco-friendly parks help our planet?

Global Context for this unit: Globalization and sustainability

Approaches to Learning: Organization. Information Literacy and Thinking

Context/Scenario/Problem Identification

I am being asked to create an eco-friendly theme park for a generation where terms like going green and eco-friendly are modern day house hold terms as we live in a time were littering as become more common and energy sources have become more harmful to the environment. Theme parks is an amusement built around an idea or theme, the main focus for a theme park is for the customers to have fun and enjoy their day out as it is an area that people spend around 4 hours on each visit. Theme parks are necessary because it’s a place where people of all ages can enjoy their with most amusement areas focused on specific ages an amusement park is focused on families and people of all ages. In the future I think the most popular theme park in the future will be the one that is different to the others whether its because it has the worlds fastest ride or maybe even just a theme that’s sets itself apart from your common Disney characters and maybe base it around a theme like “eco-friendly’’.

Problem Identification

My customers will usually come In groups as everyone has more fun with friends/family so I think the minimum amount of people that will be entering at once is two which is for a couple. He or she will not really be concentration on the ecofriendly side of things but more on the amusement of their time and the quality and prices of everything. I can provide this by a whole mixture of rides as ecofriendly is a very broad topic and so there is a huge variety I can use that can target all type of audiences. The Theme park will be located in one of the fastest growing cities in the world Dubai. I’m going to produce a design solution using SketchPro Make which is a 3d making software that can help me express ideas into a 3d format. The limitations of using this software is that it is not able to be used at school meaning that all the work for the creating the solution part will be done at home and not at school which isn’t that big of an issue as there is more time at home to work on such a program.

Identify and prioritize the primary and secondary research needed to develop a solution to the problem

What will I research?

How will I gather my information?

Primary source

How will I gather my information?

Secondary source

Why will I research this information?

When will I do this?

World’s top amusement parks

INTERNET

After I search up different rankings of amusement parks worldwide, I will then come to a conclusion of what I think is the best amusement park based on 6 different website rankings.

I will research this because it will help me know which features and which themes are more successful in this type of industry. Without the knowledge of theme park rankings it would be hard to create one which would make the very top of the rankings.

Finding out the carbon footprint of Disney Land

INTERNET

There are plenty of websites such as science blog which take to the internet to discuss the carbon footprint Disney land leaves on the environment. This will help me know how much carbon emission occurs from one of the most popular amusement parks in the world as it can help me avoid designing a theme park which emits a lot of carbon.

I will research this because it will help me compare what I’m planning to achieve which is a successful theme park that limits its negative impacts on the environment and a good way to start is to research the negative impacts the current world’s most successful amusement park has on the environment.
