Professional Knowledge and Abilities

Over the past 25 years, my career choice has been in the field of medicine. Managing an Oncology clinic for the better part of this time, I have become interested in the health care industry and its effects on us all. Initially, the majority of healthcare issues were that of the elderly or children. As time goes by, this issue has become a problem for everyone, including physicians across the nation. Therefore, my choice for this assignment is the American Medical Association.

The American Medical Association (AMA) is an organization that promotes the art and science of medicine. Its goal is to improve public health with core values such as leadership, excellence, integrity and ethical behavior. Founded by Nathan Smith Davis, in 1847, he pursued the improvement of medical education and licensure. After elected to the New York medical society, Davis quickly introduced a resolution endorsing the establishment of the national medical association to elevate standards of education in the United States.

The AMA vision is to create a society of physicians around the world that help patients, while working on the most important professional and public health issues in medicine. The AMA policies are made up of a democratic policy-making process, in the AMA House of Delegates. These committees are formed from elected representatives and others provided by the by-laws, as they play an active part in shaping the future of medicine.

This organization contributes to the professional knowledge and abilities of physicians and others through strategic issues such as Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. This initiative will expand insurance coverage for over 32 million Americans by 2019. The AMA provides physicians with data tools and strategies that encourage them in providing quality and patient centered care in safe environments.
