Title IX

Before Title IX was approved woman who wanted to play a sport was not able t6 play in the U.S.A. If you wanted to go professional you would have to go overseas especially if you are trying to play basketball. What is Title Nine exactly; it is a law that said “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance…” The Title IX was signed into law by President Richard Nixon in June 23, 1972. I am going to explain three points, which are Past, Present, and Future.

Title Nine was best known for its impact of high school and collegiate athletic, the original statute made no explicit mention of sports. The author of the early draft of Title IX was Representative Patsy Mink. Title Nine was introduced in the senate by Birch Bayh on February 28, 1972. The Senate passed it on May 22, 1972 and it was also passed by the House of Representatives on June 8, 1972. A sport that had to go through a lot was female basketball players that wanted to have professional teams in the U.S.A. Female basketball players had to go Europe, Asia or other foreign places to be paid for playing a sport they love. Finally, the United State made two different leagues the first league was the American Basketball League (ABL) which began in October 1996. The other league was the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) which swung into action in June 1997.

Currently the major sports out that are being played by women are basketball, softball, volleyball, tennis, swimming, and track & field. That would not be possible if the law Title IX was never in law, Lisa Leslie couldn’t be a famous basketball player out.
