Tragic Hero

There are different types of heroes in literature. In The Scarlet Letter Hawthorne uses the

concept of the tragic hero in his character Hester Prynne. Hester is a tragic hero for many reasons. One

reason is that she is treated sympathetically by the author. "But, on one side of the patrol and rooted

almost at the threshold, was a wild rose bush, covered, in this month of June, with its delicate

gems."(Hawthorne 1: 28-30). This shows that Hawthorne has sympathy for Hester by even though she

was done wrong there is still a kind soul in her. This is represented by the rose bush in front of the

prison door. One other reason why Hester is the Tragic Hero is because she would rather go down

almost to a shriek. "I will not give her up." (Hawthorne 8 15-16). This was an argument between Hester

and the minister about them taking Pearl from Hester. Hester would not give up and eventually got her

way and was able to keep Pearl. Hester Prynne is the obvious Tragic Hero in The Scarlet Letter. She fulfils

all the qualities of a Tragic Hero. No other character best fits the definition of one.
