In recent times, information technology trends have been influencing human lives to a substantial extent and this influence has been growing steadily over the last 3 decades. The 90's internet spurred the dotcom boom introducing the concept of eCommerce. Enterprise resource packages (ERPs) led by SAP and Oracle changed the face of back offices across the organised industry sector (manufacturing, utility and services) in the first decade of this century. Towards the end of the last decade analytics led business intelligence were the top priority across the CxO forums. With Facebook spawning new business revenue models for organizations and individuals' alike, social networking and digital marketing is threatening to emerge at the top of the IT trends list

In recent times, information technology trends have influenced human lives to a substantial extent. 2012-13 promises to continue this trend and serve as a disruptive influence on individuals and businesses.

1. With mature mobile technology driving device prices southward, adoption of tablet devices will steadily increase signalling the onset of the ‘Post-PC (PersonalComputer)' era. While more employees within organisations embrace mobile devices on account of their suaveness and intuitive interface, security, data integration and device management challenges will increase. These challenges would need to be addressed to ensure confidentiality and integrity are not compromised. With increasing demand for more and larger applications on the mobile device, the existing infrastructure of wireless networks will require significant upgrades to keep up with the bandwidth requirements.

My organization has piloted an exploratory platform based using Pyxis Mobile Inc. enabling data integration, enterprise-grade security and data synchronization in real time. We have also instituted a mobile user interface competency centre to fulfil the demand for intuitive and savvy user interfaces on the mobile device.

2. Context aware applications will appear in targeted areas e.g. GPS enabled mobiles and smart phones and tablets. For example a contextual aware application
