Cheek Cell DNA Extraction Lab

Purpose:

To see your DNA cells that came off your cheek.

Hypothesis:

Materials:

• Gatorade Test tube

• Dixie cup Pipette

• Dishwashing soap Rubbing alcohol

• Plastic spoon (to scoop the meat tenderizer)

• Plastic cup (to hold the tubes while they are setting)

Procedure:

1. Chill alcohol in ice.

2. Measure 2mL of water into a test tube.

3. Use masking tape to put your name on your test tube.

4. Squirt about 1mL of dish soap into the test tube.

5. Take 2mL of Gatorade in your mouth

6. Swish it around, rub your tongue on your cheeks or chew your cheeks gently and swish the Gatorade for about 1 minute. DO NOT SWALLOW!!!

7. Spit the Gatorade into a clean Dixie cup.

8. Pour Gatorade into the test tube with the dish soap and water.

9. Put thumb over the top of the test tube and gently rock back and forth for 2 minutes.

10. Add a pinch of meat tenderizer and let it sit for 2 minutes.
