Case Summary of Apple Inc. (2010)

Apple Inc., formerly known as Apple Computer in 1976 was founded by Steve Wozniak and Steven Jobs. Since its establishment, Apple Inc. had experienced many turnarounds in its business operations including numbers of leadership changes, various product innovations, and as well as the upside down performance during the earlier time. Apple Inc. is a well-known and strong manufacturer of electronic products, ranging from the personal computer (PC), personal media player, mobile phones, and the tablet computers. However, much of the Apple’s success could be credited to Steve Jobs who continuously contributes to the firm’s performances by creating new ideas in sustaining the growth. Apple’s success are said to started from the release of iPod with the combination of iTunes, where the company had achieve tremendous success in the market and the product had helped Apple to transfer from a struggling company into a powerful consumer electronics company. In 2005, the consumers’ satisfaction with iPod had helped to renew the consumers’ interest thus enabled Apple to enter the smartphones market with the launch of iPhone. In the PC industry, the improved in the market share of Apple’s PC was contributed by the success of iPod and iPhone as the consumers switched to Apple computers after purchasing those products. However, the competitions in the industry are fierce as Apple needs to compete with other huge industry players such as Hewlett Packard (HP), Dell, and Acer where each of them has their own strength and strategies in gaining the market shares. While in the personal media player industry, iPod and iTunes had been successfully positioned in the market which the rivals found it difficult to compete.
