Hatha Yoga Case

After learning all the yamas and niyamas in Hatha yoga class, the practice that stood out to me the most is Santosha. Santosha is part of the eight limbs of yoga and is one of the niyamas. The definition of Santosha is being content with what you have and where you are at in the present. I find Santosha to be the biggest challenge in life today.

I know this a challenge for me simply because I relate to women who love to shop. That satisfaction of purchasing a new clothes, new jewelry, new makeup, etc. is a stress reliever for me. After I buy the first item I feel satisfied, but then have the urge to buy another item in order to increase my satisfaction. You may gain a new item in the beginning but you loose money in the end. Unfortunately, I’m known to be a spender not a saver. Shopping has other negative effects for women. Shopping leads to two things, which are reputation and competition for females. Buying the newest items are what and how women define themselves now. Also, women constantly compete with each other when it comes to the physical aspects and target the name brand.

For example, I use to go shopping on Black Friday. Now when I look back, I realize Black Friday takes away the importance of Thanksgiving. For me to feel thankful for what I have and who I have in my life on Thanksgiving Day, but then fantasize what I want to buy Thanksgiving night is a shameful act. It’s been my 3rd year of not going Black Friday and I have to say I’m glad I quit this habit. Just to think all the people who prioritize Black Friday on the same night as Thanksgiving is sad.

In addition, Santosha is challenging for me when it comes to making food decisions. I have the urge to eat sweets and foods that are high in carbs. I enjoy munching on chocolate, sour patch, breads, deep fried foods, etc. I have that feeling that “I need to eat this,” “I can’t live without this,” or “It’s that time of the month” mentality in order to make
