It's Not Just Genetics Summary

For many years in the United States, obesity has been a major problem that we Americans deal with in our everyday lives. It has created high levels of obesity that we Americans have never seen before. In an article called "It's Not Just Genetics" by Bryan Walsh, it talks about the health issue in different parts of the United States. The article talks about the conditions of families who live in the city, suburban and rural areas of the U.S. it then goes into the ways how Americans are trying to change their diets. It's a topic that surrounds people in their everyday lives.

The article starts off with talking about different scenarios of Americans living in different parts of the U.S. this section shows that 43% of the Native Americans that live on the reservations are overweight or obese. This is due to the eating a lot of calories and not being as active as other Americans. The article then goes into a study that was conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC found that 30% of schoolchildren are overweight. They also found that the body mass index of those children is 10 percentile than those who were living during the 1960's or the 1970's. At the end of this part of the article, it goes into increase of the level of obesity since the 1980's and found that the percentage between six to eleven year olds that it has tripled since then.

The second half of the article talks about efforts to control obesity in certain parts of the U.S. also it talks about what it is like living in cities and rural towns. An example it gives is in Los Angeles, where snack vendors are lined up down the street waiting for the kids to come out of school. The author talks about that it is an illegal thing to do because the vendors are not supposed to being doing that. in the next part, it talks about obesity in the cities. It says that the
