Bullying is one of the negative problems for our society today. Majority of students in the schools face the occurrence of bullying on a daily basis. Bullying in schools is a growing problem nationwide. Bullying is not a hundred percent preventable, but it is possible to prevent others from being harmed in the school. A bully is defined as a person who repeatedly intimidates, harasses, humiliates, and harms people. Bullies comes in all different ages, shapes, and sizes, most are between the ages of 9-18 years of age. “Physical abuse, taunting, and exclusion of the victim from popular groups and past times are some symptoms of bullying in schools. The victims are usually those students who are typically insecure, branded as nerds, and lack a circle of friends” (www.bullyinginschools.com).

“Students who engage in bullying behaviors seem to have a need to feel powerful and in control. They appear to derive satisfaction from inflicting injury and suffering on others, seem to have little empathy for their victims, and often defend their actions by saying that their victims provoked them in some way. Studies indicate that bullies often come from homes where physical punishment is used, where the children are taught to strike back physically as a way to handle problems, and where parental involvement and warmth are frequently lacking. Students who regularly display bullying behaviors are generally defiant or oppositional toward adults, antisocial, and apt to break school rules” (www.ericdigests.org). There are a number of different methods to try and prevent bullying. No one method is right for every school, nor has one program proven to be one hundred percent effective. Many schools that create an anti-bullying program use a blend of prevention programs, intervention programs and the whole-school approach.
