A budget is a key management tool for planning, monitoring, and controlling the finances of a project or organization. It estimates the income and expenditures for a set period of time for the project or organization. It also enables the organization to make confident financial decisions and meet the organization’s objectives. It helps to determine if adjustments need to be made in programs and goals and also provide a basis for accountability and transparency. It outlines the expenditures and how that spending will be financed. However, it is not a forecast. A forecast is a prediction of the future whereas a budget is a planned outcome of the future which is defined by the plan that the organization wants to achieve.

There are a number of benefits of doing a budget. They are effective money management, allocating appropriate resources to projects, monitor performance, meet objectives, improve decision-making, identifying problems and increase staff motivation.

Budgeting is a method in which businesses plan for the future. They show how policies are to be carried out during that time period in order to meet the business objectives. Budgeting helps businesses decide where it wants to be at a future date and what policies they feel they should introduce to make sure they meet their objectives. Planning also helps the business anticipate any problems they could be faced with. By planning ahead they have provided enough time to prepare for these problems and can overcome them. For example, if the budget shows an increase in sales during a certain month like Christmas and the budget shows there's not enough labour to produce the goods they know they should hire temporary workers for those busy months.
