Problems Faced by International Students in the UK

Each year many students from across the world travel to the UK to complete their higher education, these students face many problems outside their home countries. Most people think that the language is the biggest issue for international students, meanwhile many international students don’t consider language a problem, there are other problems international students face during their period of study in the UK, for instance homesickness, cultural shock, and living on their own. Language is not the biggest problem international student’s face. This essay will discuss how much language is a problem and how are the other problems more serious? There is other problems international students face during their period of study in the UK

A major conflict that international students go through during their stay abroad is homesickness. According to Van Tilburg homesickness is a physiological distress caused by leaving home. The Symptoms of homesickness are very obvious for instance crying, loss of appetite, headaches, and lack of concentration. All of these factors that are relevant with homesickness will have an effect on the students’ academic life. Homesickness first is felt at the beginning but then it can also be felt again through the stay of the student in the abroad. (during study period)

Another surprise for the student is the cultural gap between his or her culture and the English culture and the difference in the life style. At first instance when the student reaches the UK the student feels very strange and that he doesn’t belong here, many things are different and new, the food, the weather, and the lifestyle. This cultural shock makes the international students feel unpleasant and uncomfortable. Weather is quite a problem for most international students, especially for students come from warm countries, these students need time to cope with the cold weather, weather could be an obstacle it can stop
