Database Design

A database system is referred to the relationship between the following four components: the database, database management system, database application, and users. A database is a collection of related records, tables, or other data structure. The database management system (DBMS) is a program or collection of programs used to administer the database, including database creation, and storing and extracting information. The database application is a program or set of programs used as the interface for users to access the DBMS. A user is mainly anyone that needs to access the database. In relations to a database system, users use the database application to get information to and from the database by way of the DBMS.

In my business, we use many types of database systems. The primary DBMS used is Microsoft SQL. Also used is Microsoft Access, Oracle, and in some parts of the company, there are even some older Mainframe systems using DB2. The databases are mostly used to manage external information such as various clients and cardholder data information. We also have database systems for managing internal information such as server listings, network information, and geographical data. Database architecture is the physical layout of a database. Some of the more common database architectures are relational, object-oriented, and flat file. The bulk of the databases in my business would be categorized as relational databases. These include databases in our production and increased locations.

Relational databases are the most widely used of all the database architectures.
