Corporate Culture and Corporate Social Responsibility

This week’s reading was based on corporate culture and corporate social responsibility. The two concepts relate to one another in every company. Corporate culture can be a main factor in enforcing corporate social responsibility. In this journal I will discuss chapter four and five from the text and compare the information towards the world and personal experiences

Chapter four discusses corporate culture. “Decision making within a firm is influenced, limited, shaped, and in some cases, virtually determined by the corporate culture of the firm” (Hartman, L.P., DesJardins, J. & MacDonald, C., 2014, p.149). All leaders inside of the corporation should always encourage and enhance cultures in the organization that supports ethical culture. At Target we believe in having the right person, right place and right time. We were continuously red in our guest survey scores and this was a result of the culture in our building. We received a new Store Team Leader last month and he taught the team to play offense instead of defense. This means we had to turn the culture around. He challenged us on some of the decisions that we make as well as helped us to make the right decisions for the future. With his leadership, we are now able to lead the team in the right way. From the Store Team Leader, down to the executives and the team leaders, everyone is happy to carry out our new vision for the store. As a result we have been green in our guest survey score four weeks in a row. This shows that we can have a great store, happy guests and a happy team.

Chapter five discusses corporate social responsibility. “Corporate Social Responsibility is defined as the responsibilities that a business has to the society in which it operates” (Hartman, L.P., DesJardins, J. & MacDonald, C. 2014, p.216). For this week’s discussion board we had to discuss whether corporate social responsibility was a response to social pressure or a proactive process that companies use to increase well-being. I also included how CSR affects my personal values and beliefs. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a response to social pressure for increasing well-being. Every company has a reputation to protect. When something goes wrong for a company, there is a lot of negative attention from society and the media. When a company is unable to provide social benefits, the value of the company could depreciate and affect them competing in the market.
