What does it mean when an individual is capable of starting a business that blossoms into

a company that drives customers to keep buying? It basically means that the particular

entrepreneur who started the organization took the time and risk to follow a specific goal or

market plan. That goal was to make a profit and most importantly, make long lasting

relationships with the customers who will continue to buy their products.

Let’s discuss Urban Outfitter’s success for a bit. According to the basic principals of

business, utility is the ability to provide goods and services while keeping the customer highly

satisfied during their shopping experience (Kelly & McGowen, 2010). Urban Outfitters and

their team of marketers and fashion designers were smartly able to scrutinize their target

markets, while facing larger competitors in the same arena. Because this company is capable of

establishing grounds for customers to have a unique shopping experience, they are creating

customer loyalty, which means that customers will go out their way to pay more money for a

better experience. Customers would prefer this, rather than shopping at a Big Box store (large

retailers).

Why large retailers like Sears or Wal-Mart can’t be as successful or as trendy as Urban

Outfitters? For this Niche type retailer, Urban Outfitter’s success stems from how they target

their market and its members, quantity versus demand, location of their retail stores and the

uniqueness of their many establishments. Large retailers are unable to perform or operate like
