Differences Paragraph

Differences separate people and those separations harm or worsen the lives of the people they are meant to protect. We set up mental and physical barriers to keep these differences separate. Two texts that show examples of this are “Once Upon a Time” by Nadine Gordimer and in “Mending Wall” by Robert Frost. In “Once Upon a Time” the characters set up physical barriers to separate differences. The physical barriers they set up are, generally barbed wire walls and security alarms. The differences that he characters try to separate are, rich or poor, safe or unsafe, and housed or homeless. A quote that shows how these differences are being separated for this worse is, “When the man and wife and little boy took the pet dog for its walk round the neighborhood streets the no longer pauses to admire this show of roses or that perfect lawn; these were hidden behind an array of different varieties of security walls and devices.” page 28. This quote shows that the beautiful suburb that the family used to live in is now ruined because of the attempt to separate differences between social classes. If they were to put their differences beside and stop trying to separate each other they would all be better off. In “Once upon a time the two neighbors set up a physical barrier that actually acts as a mental one. The only time the two meet is when they have their annual wall repair. The speaker thinks that the wall is a bad thing because it separates them and he wonders why they should keep it up. He ask things like, “Why do fences make good neighbors?” line 30 in response to his neighbor saying, “Good fences make good neighbors.” line 27. The difference that the neighbor wanted to separate is his pines from the speaker’s apple trees, but the speaker promised, “My apples will never get across and eat the cones under his pines” lines 25-26.
