Benjamin Jealous is an American political and civic leader and the former president and chief executive officer of the NAACP, which stands for The Nation Association of the Advancement of colored people. Benjamin Jealous visited our Kutztown campus on February 28th, 2014 he spoke about several topics one particular topic that stud out to me was the topic about how we have become lost as a people, he said that the U.S. as a whole, are failing our children because we lack the source of good education. Children are entering into as low as pre-kindergarten unprepared do to the lack of parental education and reinforcement; he spoke on the quality of teachers within the educational intuitions how public education is no longer being taken serious. Students aren’t learning or being taught properly and it is time for a change. We need to take back our communities and change our educational system and family support. We need to progress beyond skin color and differences so that we may get back in touch with taking care of our American children.

Another topic that touched me was the topic about Rehabilitation the black African American. As an African American I understood exactly what Mr. Jealous met by rehabilitation; we as a people can be very lazy when it comes to educating ourselves, and employing ourselves. “Some of us,” can be very dependent on governmental assistance; not to say that there is anything wrong with assistance but to only rely on one source of income can be very hindering to an individual’s ability to succeed. As Americans several ways that we can bring about change towards these issues is to support one another look past skin color and get to know the individual person from within. We need to lend helping hands to whoever is in need, we need to use governmental funds towards these failing schools that are overcrowded and ran down. In order to change the world we must change ourselves.
